Tynemouth Pier
Tynemouth Pier is a stone breakwater that was built to protect the mouth of the Tyne from the ravages of the North Sea. Before the construction of the two piers, the mouth of the River Tyne was exposed to the full force of the sea and many ships were wrecked, especially on Black Midden Rocks. The North Pier extends from the foot of the Priory 900 metres out to sea. It has a broad walkway on top, popular with Sunday strollers. On the lower level is the remains of a rail track that was used by trains and cranes for loading ships.
